Givin' Thanks!

I love this quote because it reminds me of something a student at my school said. About two weeks ago, the children in this little boy's class did a project in which they were asked, "What are you thankful for?" Most children said their mom, dad, family, or everything. The parent volunteer who was conducting the project wrote down the children's answers on little turkeys they made. On this one boy's turkey, it said "I am thankful for my family". But, when his mom came to get him and read what he was thankful for, he was upset. He said, "It says I'm thankful for my family, but I'm really thankful for my life."

For the last two weeks, the art project remained displayed on a board just beside my desk. And, every single day, this boy would say, "It says I'm thankful for my family, but I'm really thankful for my life." He was so adamant about making the correction, so certain of what it should say, so affirmed in what he is truly thankful for. I admired his persistence and thought, "Wow. This 3-year-old kid knows what he wants." His mom and I laughed about it, but it truly did inspire me on some level. I can't really explain it. Maybe it was just his enthusiasm. Maybe it was the fact that he's so young to be saying, "I'm thankful for my life." I mean, where did he get that? It's so existential. Once again, proof that children are amazing. And, yet another thing to be thankful for.
